Custom Painting and Refinishing, the Royal way:
Our state-of-the art paint facility in Hagerstown Maryland is unsurpassed for quality and attention to detail. The customer can design his or her own custom paint scheme, or our staff will assist as requested to developing a design that will meet the customer's demands. We will suggest design and color combinations based upon our experience as we want to ensure complete satisfaction with the final product.
When the aircraft arrives in Hagerstown, our staff will inspect all surfaces with the customer to determine the existing condition of skins, composites, windows, landing gear, control surfaces and and plastics. Any defects that could affect the quality of the exterior painting are noted and discussed with the customer prior to starting work.
All primary flight controls (Ailerons, elevators and rudder) and any necessary fiberglass or plastic components are removed from the aircraft in our maintenance facility. Flight control rigging data is recorded, then the aircraft and removed parts are moved next door to our stripping and painting facility.
All windows, fiberglass, brite-work, engine inlets, actuators and all other openings in the aircraft are wrapped with chemical-resistant foil and tape to prevent any damage by the stripper application. Then the aircraft is chemically stripped down to the bare aluminum. Foil tape is extended onto the aluminum past the point where any plastic begins, and over door and baggage compartment openings to ensure that no chemicals can leach onto the plastic or door gaskets. After all paint has been removed by the chemicals the protective foil is removed and all remaining paint that was under the protective foil is removed by a lenghty hand-sanding process. This is necessary to ensure that no plastic or rubber seals are damaged by the chemicals.
When all paint is completely removed from the entire aircraft, it is inspected for any hidden damage, corrosion and loose rivets. Minor repairs are handled as a matter of course. If substantial surface restoration, filling, riveting or sheet-metal work is necessary the customer will be contacted for approval to perform this work.
After all surface repairs are completed the bare metal is hand-sanded, then chemically etched and alodined to assure long-term protection from corosion. Then the entire aircraft is washed with a biodegradable soap and entirely hand-scrubbed and rinsed to insure a clean surface.
The aircraft is moved from the stripping booth into the paint booth where filtered, forced hot air is used to dry the aircraft. When the aircraft is thoroughly dry, all windows and other surfaces that are not to be painted are masked-off using specialized paper and tape. All engine openings and door jambs are also masked to prevent any overspray from reaching these areas.
Just prior to spraying the primer coat, a final hand wipe-down with tack cloth is done to remove any dust or lint that may flaw the final finish. Then the primer coat is applied, followed by two to three coats of aircraft specialty paint. This process is repeated on all removed access panels, spinners, wheel fairings, fiberglass components and control surfaces. As an additional option, the aircraft can be sprayed with a final clear-coat to achieve an ultra high-gloss, "wet" look.
Temperature is increased in the heated paint booth and the base color is allowed to thoroughly dry, then a two-color painted stripe design, or custom vinyl stripes and numbers are applied (depending upon customer preference) to match the customer's specs and drawings. Registration numbers are then applied (again either painted or vinyl, depending upon the customer's preference).
Once all colors and vinyl have been applied, all paper and tape is removed and the surfaces are inspected for any imperfections and touched-up as necessary to assure an excellent exterior finish. All necessary detailing is completed at this point, including the application of anti-skid material to any wing-walk areas.
While detailing is being completed the primary flight controls are moved to our maintenance facility where static balance checks and adjustments are performed. The finished aircraft and all remaining removed parts are then moved to the maintenance facility and reassembled. The control surfaces are reinstalled using the data that was recorded during the aircraft's disassembly, then all rigging is checked. Operational inspections of the flight controls, flaps and lights are conducted to ensure proper reinstallation and operation. A final inspection of gear wells, flap wells, flight control wells, static port, pitot tubes, etc. is done to ensure removal of all tape or paper. Windows are inspected and cleaned to remove any tape residue, and wheel bearings are inspected and repacked with grease. If the aircraft is of the retractable gear variety, then it will be jacked up and a gear-retraction test will be completed. Logbook entries are completed, then the aircraft is taken for a check-flight. Any discrepancies noted in rigging are addressed, and successive check-flights will be made until the aircraft flies "hands-off". Then the final logbook entries are made to return the aircraft to service, and the customer is called to arrange pick-up or delivery.
Care of Aircraft Finishes:
The finished application of paint contains a microscopic coating of resins that rise to the top of the color pigments. This clear coat provides the "shiny" appearance and prevents oxidation and acid rain damage. When washing the aircraft, do not use harsh detergents that may penetrate and wear away this surface coat. Improper cleaning agents will also compromise the UV protection designed into the paint.
Never use abrasive waxes which contain gritty compounds.
When washing or waxing, use the same care that you would when polishing your plexiglass windows. Always use soft rags - no hard brushes or paper-towels.
Do not apply degreasing materials to remove grease stains. A mild detergent with plenty of water and elbow-grease is the preferred method.
Proper care can extend the appearance of the painted surface for 10 to 15 years.
